Week 1

Hi all,
Welcome to my blog for my IMLS fellowship project(s). This term I have been assigned to work in the Digital Library Services Department, headed by Nicole Saylor. More specifically, I will be working with first year (or is it second year?) cohort Chris Ehrman on the Brian Gleinister research collection (you can take a look at the Geosciences Digital Collection). The Geosciences Department will be delegating Chris and I the task of digitizing some 7,000 paleontology research slides. I understand that there is some urgency that comes with this particular project as Professor Gleinister's health is declining. My adviser for the project will be Mark Anderson. Chris and I both met with Mark today and went over some of the specific goals for the project. On Wednesday, we will be meeting with Tiffany Adrain, Collectors Manager of the University of Iowa Paleontology Repository. Part of the process will involve working closely with Professor Adrain as the content provider and negotiating standards for the collection that fit the Geoscience and DLS department's needs. We also discussed the process of determining what standards and/or vocabularies to apply to the collection as neither Chris nor I have much Geoscience experience (unless you count the Dinosaurs 101 class I took as a sophmore). Mark brought up the USGS Thesaurus as a potentially helpful tool, but we may also have to work with students from the Geoscience department. I'm beginning to see that there is both a political and a technological component to each of these issues. Chris and I will be meeting with Mark on Tuesday to go over the basics of ContentDM, probably mostly for my benefit. Right now I feel like I just need someone to tell me what to do and where to get started! Until then..
